Dear Students:
Welcome to UC Santa Barbara. You are now part of a community that includes world-renowned scholars and teachers, as well as many of the country's most promising students. You can be proud of your university, which has been ranked as one of the very top public research institutions in the nation.
I invite you to get involved in our community life. You will find that the roads to growth and personal fulfillment take you far beyond the intellectual pursuits at the core of our daily lives. This handbook provides information on a rich variety of organizations, volunteer programs, cultural events, and athletic activities--all of which enable us to broaden our horizons while making our own unique contributions to the overall quality of life here.
Taking advantage of such opportunities also ensures that you will make many friends whose backgrounds and beliefs may be different from your own. Learning at UCSB is not confined to classrooms, laboratories, and libraries. We also learn a great deal from each other, and the diversity of our community is a valuable resource for all of us: students, faculty, and staff. Working with others who share common goals but different heritages and lifestyles will enrich our appreciation and respect not only for other individuals, but also for ourselves. It also provides excellent preparation for achieving success in our multicultural and collaborative society.
Please don't be discouraged if you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the many competing demands on your time as you begin your new life here. Thousands of others at UCSB are feeling the same way. I am sure that you will soon feel right at home in your surroundings.
Welcome from all of us. We are delighted to have you here, and I hope your life as a student is filled with exciting opportunities and rewarding experiences.
Sincerely yours,
Henry T. Yang
Chancellor
