Dolores M. Hsu

In college I majored in Music & Comparative Literature. I started graduate study in Germany and Austria where I lived for two years as a Fulbright student. It was there that I developed a keen interest in musical instruments and collecting them has been a hobby ever since. I also enjoy hiking and gardening. I live in Santa Barbara with my family; my husband was a professor of Chinese history at UCSB.

Research Interests

My research interests include late 19th century music and Chinese music history. I am Director of the Henry Eichheim Collection of Musical Instruments.

Teaching Style

I believe that instilling enthusiasm for the subject matter is the most important role a teacher can play. Encouraging students to participate actively in class discussion and maintaining high academic standards establishes an atmosphere which challenges the students to become a true part of the learning process.

Idea of a Good Time

Traveling, visiting art museums, attending concerts, dinning with friends.

Most Important Thing to Learn at College

Regardless of what their major may be, students must learn the art of critical thinking. There are two essential steps: developing the ability to form an independent point of view based on careful analysis of the material, and honing the skills, both verbal and in writing, to express ideas in a persuasive manner.

Advice for New Students at UCSB?

Some time during your first year at UCSB explore the possibility of taking a Freshman Seminar. Each quarter the College of Letters & Science offers a wide variety of small group seminars with research faculty that encourage active class participation. These seminars provide a unique opportunity to meet colleagues and to have contact with faculty in a small setting.
