I live in Summerland with my wife Cynthia, who is also a teacher here. Both of us were born and raised in Southern California and have a bunch of kids. We read, hike, swim, and hang around the beach. We have three pugs as well. For the past 15 years (until this year) I've been the NCAA faculty athletics representative for UCSB, so I have spent much time at sports events.
Research Interests
I write short stories.
Teaching Style
Informal, no lecture, class discussion.
Idea of a Good Time
I'm so old that continuing to suck air is thrilling.
Most Important Thing to Learn at College
That learning itself is a whole lot more fun even than making money.
Advice for New Students at UCSB
Make yourself get interested in all your subjects. Discard most electronic devices, prejudices, preconceived notions about anything, slow down, open your eyes. It's a new life.
