The Early Academic Outreach Program has been serving UCSB for nearly 30 years. EAOP works directly with low-income and first-generation college bound students at over 60 middle and high schools throughout Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Kern Counties. We help students achieve UC eligibility and admissions through academic development programs and early outreach services. Services include college information dissemination about the A-G requirements, UC admissions, the application process, financial aid, and matriculation into the University. We provide parent awareness programs, study skills, test preparation, testing strategies, tutorials and study group formation. EAOP annually hosts a number of summer programs and academies that focus on subject matter skill development and increasing UC eligibility rates for participating students. EAOP also hires and trains university undergraduate students as early outreach interns that are paid to provide academic support services, conduct academic tours of UCSB, and speak in the schools about the benefits of a college education and how to prepare for admissions to the UC system. EAOP also has student assistant clerical and data entry positions throughout the year. Bilingual skills and services in Spanish and English are provided by EAOP in an effort to work more effectively with Spanish Language communities and parent groups. Students with writing and/or photography skills are always needed for work on the Daily Nexus newspaper and the La Cumbre yearbook. At any one time during the year, 10 photographers and 80 writers are employed. Payment is by the story submission system. Work-Study

Staff

The Federal Work-Study Program is administered by the Financial Aid Office and supports the part-time employment of Work-Study recipients. To become a recipient, the student must apply for financial aid each academic year by the March 2 priority filing date and subsequently receive a financial aid "package" that includes a Work-Study award. Recipients who are not employed on Work-Study by the end of fall quarter automatically forfeit (lose) their entire Work-Study award for the entire academic year. For more information about Work-Study or to view current job openings, visit the Work-Study office: SAASB 2101; www.finaid.ucsb.edu/workstudy.

Work-Study and Community Service

We encourage Work-Study recipients to consider community service among their employment options. For instance, the America Reads Challenge at UCSB is a community service project that targets the reading proficiency of young school children. America Reads or any other community service position is a good way to earn your Work-Study award and to support your community. For more information about Work-Study or to view current job openings, visit the Work-Study Office (SAASB 2101) or see our website: www.finaid.ucsb.edu/workstudy.
