Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Computing Resources

The Gevirtz School's three computer labs have Macintosh and PC computers, providing students with email and Internet access; word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and web creation applications; software training and support; qualitative and quantitative research analysis; videoconferencing; OCR and image scanning; and still and video editing equipment. The Instructional/Research Labs (Phelps 3525 and 3526) have posted hours of operation and are staffed by consultants to assist students with equipment and software use. Ada's Lab (Phelps 1210) is a 24-hour, open-access, student-run computer lab with consultants on duty Monday through Friday.

A variety of equipment is available for short-term loan, including laptop computers, storage devices, video and digital cameras, slide and digital projectors, and transcribers. For more information on all Gevirtz computing services, contact the lab manager at 893-8821 or robert@education.ucsb.edu.

Graduate Student Word Processing Facility

Graduate students can gain access to computers for word processing at the Social Science Computing Facility (HSSB 1203 or Ellison 2626). This facility is intended primarily for students in the humanities and social sciences (including education), since academic departments in those disciplines tend to have fewer computers available for graduate student use. The most popular word processing programs are already installed on these computers. Students must provide their own floppy disks or flash drives for data storage.

U-mail Accounts

All graduate students can gain a free email address through UCSB. U-mail accounts can be activated and inquired about at the web address http://www.umail.ucsb.edu. The U-mail service allows for mail access via standards-based Internet technologies using protocols best suited for our mobile student base. You may activate your U-mail account if you are an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled through the Office of the Registrar.

Graduate Book Lockers

I wish I had known that the Graduate Student Lounge is a great place for students to relax and meet up with other graduate students.

All graduate students may apply for Library book lockers at the self-issuing locker station located in the lobby of the Reserve Book Room. For more information, call library security at 893-3220.

Doctoral Student Cubicles

A limited number of semi-secure cubicles are available to advanced doctoral students. To apply, call 893-3220 (not available to Master's students and doctoral students who have not yet advanced to candidacy).

Graduate Student Peer Advisors and Diversity and Outreach Advisors

UCSB graduate students and undergraduates can take advantage of the expertise and services provided by the experienced graduate students who hold positions of Graduate Peer Advisor (peers@graddiv.ucsb.edu) and Graduate Diversity and Outreach Advisor (outreachpeer@graddiv.ucsb.edu). Both of these positions are sponsored by the Graduate Division and may be reached by calling 893-2277 or visiting the Graduate Division office located at 3117 Cheadle Hall. Graduate Diversity and Outreach

Graduate Division Diversity and Outreach staff works with undergraduates and graduates at UCSB and elsewhere to promote the University and its commitment to a diverse student population. This is accomplished through attendance at Graduate and Professional School fairs at colleges and universities, professional student conferences, graduate preparation workshops, and other outreach activities. Graduate Division serves as a liaison between prospective students and departments, sharing important information with prospective students interested in graduate programs at UCSB.

Research and Career Support

The Graduate Division assists graduate students in the research of sources of student research support, conducts workshops to help students in generating effective extramural research proposals, and provides career development activities and information for graduate students interested in commencing job searches.
