UCSB Rape Prevention Education Program (RPEP)
RPEP provides education and advocacy around issues of sexual violence. Advocacy begins with conversations about how you have been affected, either as a survivor, or a friend or family member of a survivor. Services include crisis counseling, help with decisions on reporting to law enforcement, answers to questions about medical and legal procedures, help with academic and housing problems, and referrals to long-term counseling and other resources. Violence may be recent or in the past. Services are free and confidential and available to women and men, including lesbians and gay men. RPEP offers a support group for female survivors of adult sexual assault and referrals can be made to other types of support groups. RPEP offers education around these issues through the peer education program, Students Stopping Rape, and through trainings, lectures and programs conducted by professional staff. We talk about laws, facts and statistics about rape and other forms of sexual assault. We challenge the myths in our culture that blame the victim. We explain the patterns observed in relationship violence and how to help friends caught in those patterns. We give students ways to stay safer and ways to work against a culture that allows sexual violence to happen. Self-defense classes are also available. We have resources and knowledgeable staff for any students who want more information. RPEP is located in the Women's Center, SRB first floor, 893-3778.
